Coral's journey to space

Meet Coral the Explorer!

She has eight arms, can squeeze into tight spaces, and is one of the smartest creatures in the sea. Meet Coral, a clever little octopus with a big imagination. She’s curious, creative, and always up for a challenge, which makes her the perfect stowaway for a mission to space.

Coral hid inside a soft-supply bag heading to the International Space Station. Now that she’s in orbit, she’s ready to explore every corner of the station and learn everything she can. Along the way, Coral will float, discover, invent, and maybe even solve a few space problems using her unique octopus skills. But she can’t do it alone...she needs your help to document her journey.

Create a journal to draw, write, create, and think like an explorer. What does Coral discover? What problems does she solve? How does she adapt to a world where nothing stays still and everything floats?

Draw: The rocket.  Where is Coral?  Are there other passengers on board?  Where do they keep supplies?

Describe: What Coral sees from inside the capsule.

Write: A paragraph about how Coral felt before and during launch!  What did she see?  What did she hear?  What did she think about?

Challenge: Rockets shake and roar during launch. How would Coral keep from getting tossed around?

In space, Coral is floating!  Everything suddenly feels different.

Draw: Coral floating inside the space station.

List: 3 things that are easier in space and 3 things that are harder.

Challenge: Coral wants to move across the station without swimming. Design a way she could push off and steer using her arms.

Describe: What would Coral eat in space? What foods float? What’s different from eating on Earth?

Draw: A space snack Coral might like.

List: Three foods you think would be easiest to eat in microgravity.

Challenge: Design a snack that won’t float away or make a mess. What container or shape would Coral need to keep her food under control?

Prompt: Coral needs a way to sleep that keeps her from floating away!

Design: Coral’s space sleeping bag or bunk.

Describe: Where in the ISS would Coral sleep?

Challenge: Create a sleep pod that keeps Coral still, blocks out light, and holds her favorite stuffed animal.

Prompt: Coral looks out the window and sees our planet below. What does she see?

Draw: Earth as seen from the ISS.

Write: A short message Coral might send to a friend back home.

Challenge: If Coral could send back one object from space, what would it be? Why?

Coral is helping with science on the space station!

Describe an experiment Coral will do.  Is it with water? Plant? Magnets? Her health?

Draw her setup and describe what happens.

Challenge: What do you think her results were?  Why?

Prompt: Coral gets to go on a spacewalk! Describe her job outside of the spacecraft.

Draw: Coral in her space suit.

Challenge: Design Coral’s octopus-style EVA suit. How will it protect her arms, keep her warm, and help her hold tools in space? Add these descriptions to your drawing!

Prompt: It’s time to come home. What does reentry feel like? What will Coral do first when she lands?

Draw: The capsule landing.

Write: "When Coral landed, she _____."

Challenge: Reentry is bumpy and hot. Design a safe return capsule for Coral that keeps her secure and cool on the way down.

Design: A special mission patch for Coral’s journey. Include symbols that represent space, science, and adventure!
